HISTORY: VUW was established in 1945 in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California and is comprised of women who have graduated from a college or university. We are a 501-C3 Charitable Organization. Our tax ID # is 95-6122376.
VUW purposes were, and remain,
to encourage higher education with our scholarship program
to stimulate intellectual thinking
to provide opportunity for creative thinking
to strengthen friendship among university women
Scholarship Program: Since 1946 Valley University Women has continuously offered scholarships to graduating high school seniors who will be attending college or university in California. We hope to host a grand celebration in the spring of 2021 honoring our 75th anniversary of giving scholarships! This seems unlikely, however, unless current conditions greatly improve. From our first $100 scholarship of one student in 1946 to 25 recipients at $3000 in 2020 we have come a long way!
Scholarship Funds: VUW members personally raise funds for our scholarship program through an annual Fundraising Event, silent auctions, individual donations and through bequests. Recent bequests are from the estates of long-time members Vicki Manchester and Sylvia Schuster.
Programs and Activities:
Many of our normal activities are on hold durng this pandemic. The Gardening Club does still meet, virtually, on the first Wednesday of the month. See below for contact infomration.
Previously Members enjoyed monthly meetings with stimulating topics or musical entertainment. Other activities included a variety of small groups or clubs: art, travel, gardening, discussion, book, as well as day trips to museums, gardens, and places of historical signficance. New members are welcomed! We have a monthly newsletter that details our small group activities. .
